Four arrested over New Year's Eve machete attack on Melbourne's Lygon Street

Four youths have been arrested after two men were seriously injured in a stabbing on a bustling Melbourne restaurant strip on New Year's Eve.

Police allege a group of males armed with knives and machetes ambushed two men outside a restaurant on Lygon Street, near Argyle Place in Carlton, just before midnight on December 31.

The two victims, a 20-year-old Heidelberg West man and an 18-year-old NSW man were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

In a joint operation between the Gang Crime Squad and Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit, detectives raided "a number" of homes on January 13.

As as result, a 21-year-old Fitzroy man was arrested and charged with violent disorder, intentionally causing serious injury and affray.

He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

Several days later, on January 19, police raided three further homes in Reservoir, Carlton and Melbourne.

A 17-year-old boy from the Melbourne area was also charged with violent disorder, intentionally causing injury and affray.

Two other men - a 19-year-old from Carlton and a 21-year-old from Reservoir - were arrested.

They have since been released pending further enquiries.

Detectives believe the incident was targeted and the groups involved knew each other.
