Ludlam denies leadership ambitions

Australians Greens senator Scott Ludlam has played down leadership ambitions after recouping his place in parliament in Western Australia's Senate election re-run.

Senator Ludlam attributed his success to people power and the best grassroots campaign the party had run.

The campaign included a late-night speech to parliament, with his scathing attack on Prime Minister Tony Abbott viewed almost a million times on social media.

Senator Ludlam predicted a six per cent swing back to the Greens, after "serious political headwinds" at the September general election signalled a change of fortunes for the minor party.

However, he downplayed suggestions that change might include him becoming party leader.

"That's very flattering, but Christine Milne is doing a great job and has been wonderful to work with," he told ABC radio on Monday.

"I don't think there's going to be any changes."
