Malcolm Turnbull doesn't think Australians are interested in lowering the voting age to 16, but he isn't ruling it out.

The prime minister labelled the idea, flagged by Labor leader Bill Shorten last week, as a "bit of a thought bubble".

"I am very happy to debate about it if he wants to but it is not something that has been raised with me as I get around the country," he told ABC radio on Thursday.
