Lost German tourist survived on honey for five days after SA crash

A lost German tourist survived on honey for almost five days after crashing his car southeast of Adelaide.

Alexander Stelling, 32, was taken to Tailem Bend District Hospital early yesterday, then transferred to Flinders Medical Centre, after finally being found after almost a week missing.

He crashed his black Renault station wagon near Tailem Bend last Thursday and sparked a huge search effort after leaving his phone and passport in the vehicle.

Yesterday morning the German knocked on the door of Frank and Marie Henderson's property, just 3km from the crash site, The Adelaide Advertiser reports.

Mr Henderson said he believes the 33-year-old survived by taking honey from his shed and leaving money for it.

He said that a neighbour had also reported honey missing from their own shed.

When Mr Stelling knocked on his door, Mr Henderson said he knew who he was and soon learnt that the tourist had spent the night sleeping on his patio with his dog.

He added that Mr Stelling had "obviously copped a whack to the head" and appeared confused.

Mrs Henderson said the German seemed fine but was unable to tell them anything about what had happened to him.
