Logies 2018: Grant Denyer wins Gold Logie

An emotional Grant Denyer has won the Gold Logie for the Most Popular Personality on Australian Television.

Denyer also won Most Popular Presenter at last night's ceremony at the Star Casino on the Gold Coast, where the awards were held for the first time. 

"Oh my god I won!" a stunned Denyer said as he accepted Australian television's top gong from last year's winner Samuel Johnson.

"Game shows aren't important, but this is so important to me."

Denyer hosted Network Ten's game show Family Feud, which was unceremoniously axed earlier this year. 

"The power of people has been incredible this week," Denyer said, referring to a late groundswell of support that saw him win the award from the highly backed Tracy Grimshaw.

Denyer became visibly emotional when he recalled a personal crisis before the show's launch.

"Family Feud came along at a time in my life when I wasn't sure if I'd ever work again, or if I even wanted to," he said.

"I wasn't in a particularly good place, I wasn't very well.

"I was in a bit of a hole.

"I was pretty sad, I was a bit lost ... in fact I was very unwell and Family Feud gave me a ladder out of that hole."

Earlier, Ray Meagher and the absent Jessica Marais took home the Most Popular Actor and Most Popular Actress awards.

The Nine Network's flagship current affairs program 60 Minutes was inducted into the TV Week Logie Hall of Fame. 

This year marks the show's 40th on-air.

Television legend Bert Newton raised eyebrows with his comments while presenting the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding Newcomer.

Speaking about his long-time collaborator Kennedy, Newton joked about how he worked with talent behind closed doors.

"Graham Kennedy was always the sort of man who nurtured young talent. He enjoyed giving young people a chance on television, he was a great mentor, he mentored a lot of young people," the veteran Australian entertainer told the awards night.

"You knew if you went to his dressing room it was locked, he will be inside doing some mentoring. Don Lane was a mentor too."

Newton was asked to clarify his remarks in the media room where he was pressed on what exactly he meant in the current climate, considering what has been exposed in the #metoo movement.

"I was just referring to the fact that it was totally innocent as far as I'm concerned. But in fairness, these days everything is jumped on but I’m not that sort of person, I don't mean anything untoward," he said.

Newton presented the award to former accountant turned comedian Dilruk Jayasinha.
