Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones dies in a Brisbane hospital after apparent stroke

Well-known Queensland mayor Steve Jones has died days after suffering a suspected stroke.

The Lockyer Valley mayor, 55, collapsed during a meeting with other southeast Queensland mayors in Ipswich on Thursday.

Mr Jones was rushed to the local hospital before being transferred to the intensive-care unit of Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Mr Jones died in hospital this morning.

Mr Jones was elected as the inaugural mayor of the Lockyer Valley in 2008, following the amalgamation of the Gatton and Laidley shire councils.

He became one of the state's best-known community leaders with his response to the devastating January 2011 floods which all but wiped the town of Grantham off the map.

Cr Jones's death may delay next month's Lockyer Valley council election, where he was set to contest against challengers Peter O'Brien and Glenroy Logan on March 19.

Mr Jones' family is scheduled to address media on Saturday afternoon.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk paid tribute to Mr Jones' efforts in the 2011 crisis.

"Steve led his community through the devastation of the 2011 floods and into recovery," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"He was an inspiration when Queensland was at its lowest. He lifted us all."
