Locals dig deep to help out Perth family that lost everything in fire

Neighbours are rallying around a Perth family after they lost everything in a house fire.

The family of seven were alerted to the blaze by their pet dog Gypsy after an open fire place set nearby kindling on fire.

Phil Barron was asleep on their couch when Gypsy started licking his face just after 1am.

Nearly 20 firefighters responded to the blaze, managing to get it under control by 1.58am, but by then the damage had been done with the house completed destroyed.

The family are now staying at a nearby motel, but the Perth community have opened up their hearts and wallets.

9NEWS Perth has been inundated by emails from complete strangers, offering food, clothing and whitegoods.

"It makes you feel like… at least some people care," Kristy Smith said.

One 9NEWS viewer even rang in to offer the family a roof over their heads for four weeks, until they can get back on their feet.

Ashburton Drive Primary School, where two of the children attend, has become a designated drop-off point for donated goods which can be taken there between 8.30am and 3pm today.
