LNP election campaign launch to include youth policies

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman is set to announce a raft of youth policy initiatives when his Liberal National Party (LNP) officially launches its re-election bid today.

The premier will use the LNP's campaign launch to reclaim lost support by promising to build up to 22 new schools across the state from the proceeds of privatisation, The Courier-Mail reports.

He'll also commit to offering 500 free teaching degrees, commit $90 million to an innovation fund and waive open licence fees for young drivers if they complete their probation period without accruing any demerit points.

Protesters have begun to arrive outside the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, however Mr Newman will have to make the announcements without Prime Minister Tony Abbott or his deputy Julie Bishop in the audience.

The unpopular federal leaders have been noticeably absent from Mr Newman's campaign.

Not that he seems to mind, telling reporters yesterday the LNP didn't need any high-profile MPs to prop up his campaign.

Queenslanders go to the polls on January 31.
