Little girl saved by witnesses at Darwin boat club

Paramedics have praised the quick thinking of staff and patrons at Darwin's Trailer Boat Club on Saturday evening, after a seven-year-old girl almost drowned.

First responders said the little girl was spotted floating in the Club's pool around 7.20pm and was unresponsive when witnesses pulled her from the water.

St John Ambulance Head Paramedic, Craig Garraway, said the response from on-lookers was incredible. 

"Bystanders started performing CPR on the seven-year-old with some advice from our emergency medical despatchers,” he said. 

"On arrival [of emergency services] the little girl was breathing on her own and paramedics were then able to take over treatment."

He said the efforts of those at the club saved the little girl’s life. 

"The people that made that triple zero call.. people immediately taking steps to assist the young girl has obviously had a huge impact on where she is today."

The girl was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition, but hospital staff said she now remains stable. 

Mr Garraway said the incident is a reminder to the community to get CPR and First Aid certified, especially with school holidays beginning in two weeks. 

"First Aid training is the most important thing because it doesn’t matter how close you are to emergency resources, there is always going to be a time where someone has to perform first aid until emergency services can arrive," he said.
