Lindt cafe to reopen this week with tribute to Martin Place siege victims

The Lindt cafe in Sydney's Martin Place will reopen on Friday, with a permanent memorial in honour of the pair who died in December's siege.

Lindt confirmed to 9NEWS it welcome NSW Premier Mike Baird as the first customer on Friday.

The cafe will return to regular trading hours for the public on Saturday.

Australian CEO Steve Loane said reopening the cafe was "the right thing to do".

"After the tragic events that happened in December, we discussed this reopening with our staff and gave a lot of thought to next steps," he said in a statement.

"Overwhelmingly, the feeling was that reopening and moving forward is the best thing to do for everyone affected.

"We can also confirm there will be a plaque inside the café in memory of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson.  Again, it was felt this was the right thing to do, to remember Tori and Katrina and their spirit."

Mr Johnson and Ms Dawson were killed in the siege along with gunman Man Haron Monis.

The families of the two said they would like to visit the cafe once it reopened.

"Although it will be difficult at first, we hope to be able in time to return to the Lindt cafe so that her children can continue to experience one of Katrina's great joys," a statement from the Dawson family last month read.

Mr Johnson's partner Thomas Zinn said: "We would like for people to return to Martin Place and smile again."

The cafe remained boarded up after the terror attack until last month, when tradespeople entered to assess a new design for the store.

The government responded to the attack by toughening counter-terror laws and the Citizenship Act.
