Liberals disendorse Victorian candidate

Friendly comments about his Labor opponent have cost a Victorian Liberal his candidacy in the federal election.

The party was expected to disendorse Corio candidate Murray Angus after comments he made to the local paper, the Geelong Advertiser.

The motion to give 71-year-old Mr Angus the boot for failing to "comply with the rules and procedures required by all endorsed Liberal candidates" ran until midnight but was likely to succeed.

Mr Angus was running against shadow defence minister Richard Marles in the Geelong seat and told the Advertiser this week the sitting MP was a "good bloke" and he couldn't really criticise him.

Mr Marles has held the seat since 2007 and sits on a margin of about 10 per cent.
