Liberal MPs want how-to-vote card changes

Federal Liberal MPs are pushing for a ban on unionists and party volunteers handing out how-to-vote cards at polling booths.

An alternative proposal to have cards displayed on a stand manned by registered volunteers is believed to have the initial support of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, the Herald Sun reported on Tuesday.

Victorian MP Jason Wood said the issue needs to be looked at, telling the publication: "I've had so many people complain to me about aggressive behaviour at polling booths".

But Australian Greens spokeswoman Lee Rhiannon indicated her party wouldn't support the move.

"The Liberals only want this out of self-interest, not to improve democracy," she told the Herald Sun.

Deputy chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, Labor MP Andrew Giles, believes the federal government should focus instead on donation reforms.
