Lessons for Vic from WA poll: Napthine

The swings against the major parties in the Western Australia Senate election re-run sends a clear message to Victoria's politicians that they face a tough November poll, Premier Denis Napthine says.

Dr Napthine said the message he walked away with from the weekend's results was that the November 29 state election would be a hard-fought battle.

"I am telling my candidates and my members they should be working hard each and every day to convince people to vote for the coalition government," Dr Napthine told reporters on Monday.

After swings against both major parties in WA, the Liberals secured two seats while Labor, the Australian Greens and the Palmer United Party (PUP) picked up one each.

The sixth seat was yet to be decided.
