Queensland MP charged with assault after alleged altercation

Queensland Labor MP Les Walker has been charged with assault and banned from Townsville's Safe Night Precinct for the second time this year.

The Mundingburra MP has been charged with common assault after an alleged altercation with a 39-year-old man at a Palmer Street restaurant on Friday.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, who earlier this year said she was "very disappointed" in Mr Walker after being involved in another fight incident in Townsville, today said she was "angry" over the incident.

"I expect all of my MPs to meet the highest standards," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I am angry that I have had to repeat this to Les.

"Regardless of what has occurred and who is at fault, Les has failed in his promise to me not to be placed in circumstances where those standards can be questioned."

Mr Walker has been banned for a second time from the city's Safe Night Precinct and today agreed to step down from his parliamentary roles.

"He has agreed to stand down from his role on the Transport and Resources Committee and from his role as a Temporary Speaker," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I am deeply disappointed."

In January, Mr Walker was involved in a fight at Townsville's Mad Cow Tavern which saw the MP knocked out.

While no charges were pressed at the time, he was still banned from the nightlife district.

"It won't happen again," he told reporters at the time.

He is due to appear in Townsville Magistrates' Court on August 16.
