Relief for Brisbane drivers with Legacy Way tunnel set to open

Brisbane’s long-awaited Legacy Way tunnel will open tonight, with an opening toll of $3 per car and an estimated travel time of four minutes.

The first vehicles will drive through the tunnel about 9pm tonight, Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced today.

Legacy Way connects the Western Freeway to the Inner City Bypass, allowing vehicles to avoid Milton Rd.

"This is another milestone in the infrastructure story of Brisbane – a major 4.6km facility going from Toowong through to Kelvin Grove," Cr Quirk said.

"It will mean just one traffic light between just outside of Ipswich and that of the Sunshine Coast.

"It also means we will start running bus services very soon – the 433 from Moggill through to the City – and it will mean a faster trip for those people.

"Equally we will see improvements in Milton Rd and Coronation Dve as a result of this facility."

The opening toll of $3 per car and $1.50 per motorcycle will run until 15 November, after which tolls will increase to $3.90 per car and $1.95 per motorcycle.

The full toll price of $4.85 per car and $2.43 per motorcycle will be introduced on 1 May, 2016.

Tolls will be charged via the go via system.
