Learner motorbike riders caught doing almost triple the speed limit

Two learner motorbike riders have been caught travelling almost triple the speed limit in western Melbourne.

The two young men, aged 19 and 21, were first spotted by police on Footscray Road about 8pm last night.

A laser detected they were travelling 116km/h in a 40km/h zone, Victoria Police said.

The pair were pulled over by police officers from Melbourne Highway Patrol.

The men, one from Camberwell and another from Taylors Lakes, told police officers they had only been granted their learner permits last month.

Both motorbikes were impounded by police for 30 days at a cost of $896.10 each.

Police expect to charge the men with speed dangerous and exceeding the speed limit.
