'Heat was intense': Long-term resident killed after fatal caravan fire in Melbourne

Neighbours have described the moment an "intense" fire destroyed a caravan, killing a man in Melbourne's west yesterday.

Emergency services were called to Honey Hush caravan park in Laverton North after reports of a fire about 6.30pm.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze, before discovering the body of long-term resident Ross Laycock.

Laycock, who was also known as Ken, was believed to be in his 70s and had lived inside his caravan for more than 15 years.

Manager Annie-Marie Tedesco described Ken as "lovely".

"He's someone you look forward to seeing and having a chat with always," she said.

"(He) has positive things to say... We're all really sad."

Neighbour Tracey Verlander said the fire happened quickly.

"I just started yelling out 'get out' and by that stage, it was fully ablaze," she said.

"No one could get in the heat was intense."

Police are not treating the blaze as suspicious.
