Learner driver 'won’t fight' charges over alleged hit-run that injured toddler

A learner driver has faced court over an alleged hit-run crash that left a Melbourne toddler with serious injuries.

Police allege Zachery Larkins, 21, was driving along Railway Avenue when two-year-old Damon Michell ran onto Laverton road and was struck.

Instead of stopping to help, Larkins is accused of driving off then dumping the grey station wagon at a shopping centre.

Outside the Melbourne Magistrates Court today, the accused’s lawyer said his client is “very remorseful” to Damon’s family.

“He was in a state of shock at the time, that’s the explanation for his offending. He’s very sympathetic to the family,” Glenn Thexton told reporters.

Larkins has been charged with failing to stop and render assistance during a vehicle accident where someone was injured and being an unaccompanied learner driver.

While his lawyer wouldn't say whether the Laverton man knew he'd struck the boy, he did indicate there were no plans to fight the charges.

“It will be resolved into a plea of guilty,” Mr Thexton said.

The lawyer revealed the 21-year-old hasn’t personally apologised to Damon’s family, but has conveyed his remorse through police.

The two-year-old remains in hospital.

Larkins will remain on bail until his next court appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates Court in December.
