Laurie Oakes unveils The Crusher

Nine News political editor Laurie Oakes has tonight unveiled his latest method of saying goodbye to outgoing MPs.

“The Crusher” will see politicians who go down fighting in today’s federal election end up in a “political scrapheap”, all thanks to Nine’s graphics team.

“I gave it some thought , and since there are a few MPs tonight headed to the political scrapheap, I thought we'd better find a way to keep the pile from getting too big,” Oakes said.

In an on-air demonstration, Oakes put Nine’s own Ben Fordham and Ross Greenwood into the Transformer-like contraption – lining up a cube with their faces superimposed on it, before having it crushed and ejected.

Nine’s past coverage of state and federal elections has included The Boot, The Shredder and The Shark – which saw politicians dropped “down the gurgler” and fed to some CGI sharks, waiting hungrily below.
