Lauren Bacall dies of stroke aged 89

Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall has died in New York City, aged 89.

The Humphrey Bogart Estate confirmed her death on Twitter.

“With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall,” the tweet read.

TMZ is reporting the actress had a “massive stroke” at her home.

In the 1940s, Bacall burst on to the scene with her sultry good looks and husky voice.

Her breakthrough role was in the 1944 classic To Have and Have Not, where she first met and fell in love with her future husband Humphrey Bogart.

Theirs was to become one of the most enduring Hollywood romances, despite the 25 year age gap. They married and stayed together until his death in 1957.

In 2009 she received an honorary Academy Award “in recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of motion pictures.”

In 1999, she was ranked as 20th in the top 100 of all time stars.
