Latest found object unlikely from MH370

An object recently found on the same island where debris from MH370 was found last year is unlikely to be from an aircraft, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau says.

The item was found on La Reunion by Johnny Begue, the same member of a beach clean-up crew who in July last year found a wing piece known as a flaperon, which was later confirmed as being from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight.

Both objects were placed in the hands of French authorities, as the Indian Ocean island is a French territory.

"Current advice is that it is unlikely to be from an aircraft," the ATSB said in its weekly search update on Wednesday.

Another possible piece of MH370 debris with the words "NO STEP" on it was discovered earlier this month in Mozambique by American lawyer Blaine Gibson, who has been self-funding his own private search for the Boeing 777.

South African teenager Liam Lotter found an object with "676EB" stamped on it while he was on holiday in Mozambique in December but only recently notified authorities as it was initially dismissed by his parents as a piece of rubbish.

The ATSB said arrangements were being made to bring both pieces to Canberra, where they would be examined by Australian and Malaysian investigators, and specialists from Boeing.
