Postcard takes 50 years to arrive at Adelaide home

An Adelaide couple sorting their mail last week discovered a postcard from Tahiti postmarked 1966.

The faded postcard from the South Pacific island was delivered to the Wattle Park home of Tim and Claire Duffy on Monday but addressed to “Robert Girogio” from “Chris”.

In his message written half a century ago, Chris penned that although the weather was humid he was “enjoying myself greatly”.

The photograph on the postcard shows the waterfront of Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia.

The late delivery prompted an apology from Australia Post.

“It is clear something went wrong 50 years ago after the postcard was posted in French Polynesia, and we apologise for the inconvenience,” a statement from Australia Post said.

“Australia Post takes great pride in the timely, safe and efficient delivery of mail and we are confident that the vast majority of mail and parcels arrive on time.”
