Credits roll on Brisbane’s last video store

That’s all folks.

The last remaining video store in Brisbane is calling it quits.

Brenton Snell will tonight close his Network Video store in Oxley for the last time, having spent years trying to save a dying tradition.

Technology has killed the video store.

Like the Walkman, Discman and VCRs before them, DVD rentals will soon be nothing more than a relic of simpler times.

Mr Snell recalls a trip to the video store as a kid being a monthly treat – a far cry from today, when streaming services provide a constant flow of new titles, right to our televisions.

“We grew up in a small mining town in Central Queensland,” Mr Snell told The TODAY Show’s Sylvia Jeffreys. “We used to drive two and a half hours to get our movies, so it was a treat for us to go once a month into our grandparent’s place and hit the movie store.”

So what will happen to the thousands of titles still carefully stacked on the shelves, categorised as either New Release, 3-Day or Weekly? They'll be sold off to new homes and possibly become collectors’ items.

Mr Snell has stayed in the game as long as he could, working hard to keep his passion alive.

“It was definitely a challenge,” he said. “We would have liked to make it further.”
