A Sydney commuter bus caught fire in the Lane Cove Tunnel's westbound lane around 8pm last night, forcing a closure of both lanes whilst emergency services fought to extinguish the blaze.

The bus contained a number of occupants, each escaping the fire unharmed.

About 40 vehicles were travelling through the tunnel at the time in a scene of thick smoke, with dozens of cars trapped behind the ordeal for an extended period.

The tunnel's built in sprinkler system burst into action before emergency services arrived, with the deluge immediately helping to control the fire.

A Fire and Rescue spokesperson told 9news that the tunnel's exhaust system worked to keep smoke levels down while passengers waited to exit the tunnel.

It is unclear at this stage what caused the fire.

Investigations are ongoing.
