Mother horrified after thieves target home with axe

A Melbourne mother-of-three has been left terrified after two thugs attacked her front door with an axe during a violent home invasion.

Mary Sampieri was asleep when the pair randomly targeted her Lalor home around 3.50am on Saturday.

The duo tried to gain entry to the house before attacking the security door and a CCTV camera with a hatchet, then smashing her new car with a metal pole.

"If they had of got in my house would've been completely destroyed and smashed up. It was so violent and vicious," Mrs Sampieri said.

The incident was captured on security cameras and there are clear images of both men involved.

It was a hot night and the front door had been left open but the screen door was locked.

Also home at the time was Mrs Sampieri's husband and adult son, but it was the 55-year-old who initially confronted the thugs.

"He said he'll be back and we'll all be dead," she said.

"He was high on some sort of substance or drugs. You could see he was on something. It was out of control, it was really violent."

She said she's now too afraid to be stay at home alone.

"I can't stay by myself, I'm crying all the time. It's just shocking. I don't think I'll ever get over it."

Police are investigating and believe the men are aged in their late teens to early 20s.

"It's pretty shocking...they're going after a family that has really nothing to do with anything and then all of a sudden they've got these two males turning up to their house," Senior Constable Paul Salvatico told 9NEWS.

The men were seen fleeing in a green Holden Commodore.

"I just hope that they catch the scum and they get them off the streets and lock them up," Mrs Sampieri said.
