'Weak and cold': Wombat stranded in middle of lake rescued
A wildlife rescuer has saved a wombat after it became stranded on a stump in the middle of a lake on the Victoria and New South Wales border.
The wombat was spotted by a local resident while fishing over the weekend on Lake Mulwala near Yarrawonga.
Dutch Thunder Wildlife Shelter was alerted and rescued the animal, which was stuck on about half a kilometre from shore.

The shelter said via social media, that the wombat appeared to be weak and cold before the rescue.
"After a quick chat with (the local resident), we headed out and sure enough as we got closer to the spot you could see the poor, cold, scared wombat, stranded," Dutch Thunder Wildlife Shelter said.
"From a safe distance, we made a plan, with all our equipment ready, we headed in.
"The wombat was so weak from its experience, it didn't put up a fight, it was happy to be bagged and pulled aboard the boat."

Despite some minor wounds, wildlife rescuers are hopeful to release the wombat in the near future.
It comes a week after an echidna was found struggling in the middle of Lake Eildon in Victoria.
The echidna was escorted to land via a wakeboard safely.
