Labor wants to shake up encryption laws

A year after surrendering to federal government pressure to back encryption-busting laws, Labor wants to tweak the controversial powers.

The opposition agreed to support the bill in the final sitting fortnight last year due to national security concerns around terror threats in the holidays, with its support contingent on the government eventually changing the bill.

The Morrison government is yet to introduce amendments to the bill, so Labor will propose its own legislation in the Senate on Wednesday.
