Federal Labor will spend $21 million to pilot a youth jobs program in areas of high youth unemployment.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten announced his youth unemployment policy to support 3000 young people with training and work experience and help them transition into jobs.

"Through work experience young people will get a practical understanding of what employers expect and what career the young person could pursue," Mr Shorten said in a statement on Friday.
