Labor to reinstate disability commissioner

Labor has vowed to reinstate a full time disability discrimination commissioner if elected - by scrapping the position held by former rights commissioner Tim Wilson.

The coalition in 2014 scrapped the disability advocacy post held by Graeme Innes, later rolling it into the age discrimination commissioner's job.

The re-established commissioner would replace the vacant post left by Mr Wilson, who stepped down to contest the seat of Goldstein as a Liberal candidate earlier this year.

The commissioner will have a new focus on boosting jobs for people disability by working with community and business.

Labor leader Bill Shorten said discrimination against people with disability was far too common.

"That's why Australia needs a dedicated disability discrimination commissioner - because people with disability deserve a powerful voice to advocate their interests."
