Labor to get national security briefing

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will be briefed on the national security situation in Australia following the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris.

Mr Shorten confirmed he would receive a security briefing on Sunday afternoon, saying he remains confident in the agency assessment that the terror alert level doesn't need to be raised.

Both sides of politics were willing to work together to provide extra resources and powers to security agencies and the political parties would not be divided by Islamic State atrocities, he told reporters in Melbourne on Sunday.

Mr Shorten said there has yet to be a case made for Australia to increase its involvement in Syria and Iraq.

"If there is the case to be made for greater expansion that will be shown to be effective, that case will be made," he said.

On the revelation that one of the Paris attackers may have entered Europe as a refugee, Mr Shorten said it was important to have security screening.

"What I don't want to do is tar all refugees with the same brush," he said.

On comments made by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that Australia could send peacekeepers to Syria, Mr Shorten said there needed to be a peace deal first.

"It may be premature to conjecture about that until there is a peace arrangement," he said.
