Australians living in areas of disadvantage and low employment will be placed into local jobs under a Labor pledge.

The opposition has committed $68 million for a new community project targeting 20 areas with low educational attainment or multi-generational disadvantage to put residents into work.

"No matter where you live, you should have the same opportunities for a good job and a decent life as any other Australian," Labor leader Bill Shorten said in a statement on Thursday.
