Labor takes swipe at university chiefs

Federal Labor has questioned the judgment of university vice-chancellors who support a controversial plan to deregulate university fees.

The Abbott government has failed to win sufficient support in the Senate for its plan, despite backing from all but one of the nation's university chiefs.

"The political acumen of some of the vice chancellors is open to question," Labor's higher education spokesman Kim Carr told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.
