Labor still mulling pension changes

The Labor Party is still crunching the numbers on proposed changes in the federal budget to the age pension before announcing whether it will reject or support them.

The government is tightening the pension assets test and expects about 91,000 part-pensioners to be cut off, 235,000 others to get less money, and payments for 170,000 retirees to increase.

"We need to see how the numbers stack up, whether or not people will be worse off and how many," opposition frontbencher Matt Thistlethwaite told Sky News on Thursday.

He said the party had not yet formed a view and was still consulting with various groups.
