Labor Shadow Treasurer addresses potential re-opening of NSW beaches

NSW Shadow Treasurer Walt Secord has warned of a second wave of coronavirus cases if the government re-opens the state's beaches.

He said that while he supports the Berejiklian government's decision, he stressed that it must be done with clear consideration of medical advice.

"We are a national hotspot here in Coogee with 177 cases in this area alone," he said from Coogee Beach.

"We don't want to see a second wave or a second peak like they did in Singapore."

Mr Secord admonished the government's "confusing" messaging around the restrictions regarding COVID-19, and that they should implement a "framework and timetable" for exactly how the move will happen.

Member for Coogee Dr. Marjorie O'Nielle also joined Mr Secord to say that safety is the priority for the decisions moving forward concerning NSW beaches.

"Not only the safety of our locals, but also the safety of our lifeguards, who will be put at risk while rescuing people who could potentially have coronavirus."

Confusion around what is allowed and what isn't during the COVID-19 lockdowns has been causing some to break the rules, with residents of New South Wales named the worst offenders.

People are continuing to go out in public with just a 27 per cent drop in visits to parks, recreation areas, national parks and beaches.
