Labor Senator mocks 'knights and dames' plan

It is safe to say Labor senator Sam Dastyari does not rate Prime Minister Tony Abbott's plan to reintroduce knight and dame honours.

During a speech to the Senate, Dastyari took a poetically phrased, almost four-minute long dig at the PM’s decision.

"Hear Ye, Hear Ye. My Lord, Lady, and Lieges," he begins before going on to declare Abbott “a Prime Minister with a broad sword in his hands".

The speech also drew heavily on the nation’s troubled car manufacturers: "With Holden and Ford already leaving, the carriage industry is a growth area this government is prepared to embrace. Rumours abound that Dame Gina Rinehart will supply the shields, armour and weaponry."

"While some may claim this is dastardly trick to foil plotters in the court seeking to establish an anarcho-syndicalist commune, or conspire to create a new republic, I will smite thee, in His honour!" he boasted.

Senator Destyari ends his speech with a nod to pop culture, announcing: "Friends, welcome to the Game of Tones."
