Labor seeks Abbott promise on super age

Labor has called on Tony Abbott to rule out changes to the superannuation preservation age.

The preservation age for super already is being gradually increased from 55 and will reach 60 by 2025.

But the Productivity Commission says there could be a budget saving of $7 billion a year towards the middle of the century if the access age was gradually increased to 65.

The prime minister has pledged no adverse or unexpected changes to super under a coalition government.

But shadow treasurer Chris Bowen has questioned whether this extends to lifting the access age - something Treasurer Joe Hockey flagged last year.

"The prime minister must clearly and categorically rule out any changes to the superannuation preservation age," he says.
