Labor's D'Ath delivers maiden speech

Redcliffe finally has a voice in Queensland parliament after three months in the political wilderness.

Labor's Yvette D'Ath delivered her maiden speech on Thursday after winning the seat in a by-election on February 22 from the LNP's Kerri-Anne Dooley. She replaces disgraced LNP-turned-independent Scott Driscoll.

"I will not sit quietly; I will be the voice that the community wants and the voice that the community truly deserves," Ms D'Ath said.

Mr Driscoll quit in November after he was found guilty of contempt of parliament for dodgy business dealings, and fined $90,000.

Ms D'Ath told parliament the electoral could have been spared the pain if the LNP had better vetting processes.

"Mr Driscoll's conduct was known by many, including his financial dealings with the community organisation Regional Community Association Moreton Bay at the time he was preselected and before he was elected," she said.

Ms D'Ath, who has been appointed Labor's education spokeswoman, will again represent the bayside after serving two terms as federal member for Petrie, which includes Redcliffe.

She is the 15th person to have served in the federal parliament and then in the Queensland parliament, and the only female to do so.
