Labor promises to never sell the ABC

One major political party voted to sell the ABC, now the other major political party has voted to make sure the public broadcaster is never sold.

Labor's national conference passed an amendment on Monday to ensure the ABC always remains in public hands, as part of the party's policy platform.

It comes just months after the Liberal federal council voted to privatise the broadcaster, forcing then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull to promise the ABC will never be sold.

Labor also promised to provide "significant and increasing" funding to the ABC and SBS every three years.

"Labor recognises that they are our public broadcasters and they are owned by us," delegate Rose Jackson said when moving the motion.
