Federal Labor would support Australia storing other countries' high-level nuclear waste under the right conditions, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says.

A royal commission has found that South Australia could earn billions of dollars in revenue and create thousands of jobs if it stores and disposes of nuclear waste.

"What we need to make sure if it's going to be high levels of storage, getting into the international business of storing other people's nuclear waste, is that there's an economic benefit, that it meets all the environmental concerns, and that there is community support," Mr Shorten told reporters in Adelaide on Tuesday.
