Labor eyes changes to political logos

Political parties could be restricted from using some flags or symbols in their logos under proposed new laws.

Labor frontbencher Catherine King on Monday introduced to parliament a private bill that gives the Australian Electoral Commission the power to consider the historical and cultural relevance of flags or symbols when deciding whether a logo is appropriate or not.

It follows the approval in October of the Australia First (NSW) party's logo that included the Eureka Flag, which Ms King said was an icon in her electorate of Ballarat and should not be used by the far-right group.
