The opposition says the federal government must explain why it has yet to fill a high-profile diplomatic post months after sacking former Victorian premier Steve Bracks from the job.

Mr Bracks was due to take up the role as Australia's consul-general in New York after being appointed to the position in May 2013.

The assignment was cancelled in September by Foreign Minister-elect Julie Bishop.

Deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek said in a statement on Wednesday the government needs to explain why the position has been vacant for five months and name Mr Bracks' replacement.

She said Australia's diplomatic, business, and cultural interests in New York have gone without representation for months because of the indecision.
