Labor amps pressure on Speaker

Labor is seeking answers from Speaker Bronwyn Bishop over her alleged use of her parliamentary suite for Liberal Party fundraising.

Manager of opposition business Tony Burke wants to refer claims the Speaker's dining suite was used for a fundraising event on budget night to the Committee of Privileges and Members' Interests.

Labor is querying whether that constitutes an "improper interference" with the operations of the lower house.

Mr Burke said it has always been the case that venues in parliament were available for hire but the Speaker's office is not one of them.

"This is not an ordinary venue," he told the chamber on Monday.

"Your job is not owned by the Liberal Party."

Mr Burke said the Speaker's office was ostensibly supposed to be independent in the parliament.
