Rugby player Kurtley Beale is several hours into a Sydney grilling over lewd and offensive text messages which have put his playing future in doubt.

Beale has been accused of sending lewd texts and offensive messages to teammates and former Wallabies business manager Di Patston.

His teammates left earlier today for the Wallabies' spring tour of Europe.

Beale's best case scenario is a fine, allowing him to join his teammates on tour.

The worst case scenario is his contract with the ARU will be terminated.

Beale will make a 70-page submission to the independent hearing and has asked for former coach Ewan McKenzie and Ms Patston to be present for cross-examination.

Neither are compelled to give evidence as they are no longer ARU employees.
