More than 50 weapons taken off NSW streets in major operation

More than 50 weapons were seized across New South Wales in a major operation targeting knife crime.

Operation Foil ran from 1pm on April 11 to 1.30am on April 13, involving more than 800 officers across the state.

Police seized 51 weapons and charged 145 people with weapon-related offences.

Also, 51 people were arrested over outstanding warrants, and police also tallied 170 drug detections, 1065 traffic infringement notices, and 410 rail infringement notices.

Detective Superintendent Darren Newman said the aim of Operation Foil was to remove weapons from the streets and make the community safer.

"Operation Foil was established to focus on knife crime and to get these dangerous weapons out of the hands of those individuals who may potentially use them to target other people," Newman said.

"People need to understand that carrying a knife is illegal unless you have a justifiable reason.

"If you are armed with a knife and become involved in an altercation where someone is injured or even killed, you can face a substantial prison sentence."

One 33-year-old man was also charged with firearm possession after police spotted him smoking a cigarette in a restricted area at a Bankstown bus interchange.
