The states and territories where double demerits won’t apply this long weekend

The King’s birthday long weekend is just days away and motorists need to get across double demerit rules before they kick in.

Not all states and territories in Australia enforce double demerits over public holidays, while one enforces them year-round.

Here’s a guide to where double demerits will apply over the June long weekend before it kicks off.

NSW, WA and the ACT

The double demerit period will run from Friday, June 5 through Monday, June 8 in NSW, Western Australia and the ACT.

Double demerits will apply to offences like speeding, using a mobile phone, not wearing a seatbelt, riding without a helmet, and some school zone offences.

Fines associated with double demerit offences will not be doubled.

Queensland

Queensland is an outlier in that it enforces double demerits all year round, but only for some repeat offences.

Motorists caught not wearing a seatbelt, using their phone, or speeding more 20km/h over the limit twice within a 12-month period cop double demerits.

Double demerits also apply for subsequent repeat offences.

Victoria, Tasmania, SA and the NT

Motorists in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory are not subject to double demerits over the King’s birthday long weekend.

In fact, double demerits don’t apply in those jurisdictions at any time of the year.
