Toan Truong disturbed an intruder in the family home just after 5am this morning in Melbourne’s west.

He was shot when he approached the intruder.

“It’s shocking, it was unbelievable, he’s a father of one-and-a-half, his wife is carrying their baby girl,” Tai Truong, the victim’s brother, said.

The victim’s three-year-old son, Ethan, is understood to have witnessed the incident.

The 43-year-old man managed to tell his wife he’d been shot.

He died minutes before paramedics arrived at the family home in Sunshine West.

It is not yet known whether this was random, or whether the gunman had come looking for Toan.

Neighbours said they heard gun shots before the intruder fled.

Police believe the man jumped a number of backyard fences in his escape to a nearby getaway car.

A police dog attended the scene shortly after and tracked him to a close location, before the tracks stopped.

Police and the SES combed the area around the Alison Street home throughout the day, however the killer is still at large.
