THE SECOND DAY OF CARDINAL GEORGE PELL'S EVIDENCE

NOT OF MUCH INTEREST

* "It's a sad story but it was not of much interest to me." Cardinal Pell's comment when asked why he didn't know more about the activities of notorious pedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale. It drew loud gasps from observers in Sydney and in Rome.

NO REASON TO TURN MY MIND

* "The suffering of course was real and I very much regret that, but I had no reason to turn my mind to the extent of the evils that Ridsdale had perpetrated," he explained.

MORAL TEACHING

* It was suggested to the cardinal that he was not being truthful about his awareness Ridsdale's offences were common knowledge. His response "We work within a framework of Christian moral teaching, or certainly we should, and discussion of the secret faults of others is not encouraged," received more gasps in Rome.

HEARD NOTHING

Despite widespread rumours about Ridsdale and others, Cardinal Pell repeated his evidence that he knew nothing about sexual abuse. "It wasn't known to me."

MULKEARNS DECEIVED HIM

* He said Ballarat Bishop Ronald Mulkearns lied to him about why Ridsdale was moved around. Cardinal Pell was a consultor to Mulkearns and says the deception was because "he might have wanted to protect us from his wrongdoings ... and he did not want me to share in his culpability ... because consultors would have asked questions about the propriety of such a practice (moving Ridsdale on)".

He described Mulkearns' actions as grave, inexplicable and reprehensible.

RIDSDALE'S DIFFICULTIES

He said he understood there had been a series of difficulties with Ridsdale "but it certainly was not stated that those difficulties touched on pedophilia and crimes".

CULPABILITY

It was put to him that if he did know about Ridsdale's offending the commission could find he was culpable too.

"That is taken for granted. It is very clear of course, that the decision is one of the Bishop's that the consultors only have an advisory capacity, and of course, all of us have to respect the evidence."

"There is a saying in the church and elsewhere: `Those who know don't say and those who say don't know'," the Cardinal said, explaining why priests, because of confession, were among the most secretive of people.

A PERFORMANCE

Ridsdale's nephew and victim David Ridsdale said that in blaming Bishop Mulkearns, who is dying of cancer, Cardinal Pell had thrown "a whole bunch of people under a bus."

"We feel like we've watched a performance rather than evidence," Mr Ridsdale said.
