A teenager has been charged after an alleged unprovoked attack outside a fast food restaurant in Melbourne's north-west.

The incident outside a Keilor Park fast food restaurant on July 8, left a man needing reconstructive facial surgery, police have said.

The victim, a 49-year-old Keilor man, was on the patio area outside the restaurant just after midnight when it occurred.

Police say the victim man was on the patio area outside the restaurant just after midnight.

Two males who were exiting the restaurant walked past the man, before one of them returned to the victim, allegedly striking him in the face.

The 17-year-old was charged with intentionally causing injury and recklessly causing injury.

The Maidstone boy will face a children's court at a later date.
