Kate Jones could take on Newman again

Kate Jones could be the comeback kid for Labor and again take on Premier Campbell Newman at the next Queensland election.

Mr Newman took the seat from Ms Jones in 2012 when the Liberal National Party stormed to power with a huge parliamentary majority.

Mr Newman recorded a 12.6 per cent swing after preferences, well above the state average, swept along by voters tired of two decades of Labor government.

But Labor has always believed in Ms Jones' popularity in the electorate of Ashgrove, which she held for two terms.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says she's held preliminary discussions with the heavily-pregnant former environment minister about putting her up against Mr Newman again.

"We will let Kate concentrate on having her baby and then I'll have a catch up with her in the very near future," Ms Palaszczuk said on Friday.

"I'd love to see Kate Jones run again. She's a hard working local and all the people say to me they'd like to see her back in the seat of Ashgrove.

"It's going to be tough coming up to the next election and you have a premier in that seat, so I suppose time will tell."

Labor is expected to begin selecting candidates in targeted seats after this month's Redcliffe byelection.

Comment has been sought from Mr Newman.
