Dust storms sweep through parts of South Australia

Parts of Adelaide have been blanketed in an orange haze as a sudden dust storm swept across South Australia today.

Winds of more than 70km/h blasted topsoil through the state's mid-north with health warnings issued for several regions.

Roads in the mid-north were closed due to the wild weather with emergency crews called out to a multi-car crash on Balaklava Road, Balaklava where five were injured.

Witnesses told 9News the conditions turned suddenly, with the dust becoming thicker in a matter of moments as motorists were left stranded for hours in the low-visibility traffic.

The majority of damage from the windstorm was fallen trees with close to 40 callouts to emergency crews.

SA Health said anyone with breathing or heart conditions should remain indoors if possible while the dust is in the air.

"This is also really important for parents of children so we are saying to parents 'watch your children, pay attention to how they are breathing and look for asthma symptoms'", Asthma Australia's Nigel Cooper told 9News.

Visibility around Glenelg was poor for most of the day with the orange skies stretching to Port Noarlunga and the Hills.

The threat from a grass fire burning on South Australia's Kangaroo Island was lowered with residents still advised to be cautious.

Ferries to Kangaroo Island were also cancelled due to the unpredictable weather and the South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) is continuing to update affected locals.

The CFS said a fire was burning at Moores Road, near Hog Bay Road, and Milkys Road at Haines, south-west of American River.

The blaze was burning in a southerly direction towards Three Chain Road and Milkys Road.

The CFS had earlier warned residents to take action with the bushfire threatening those who weren't prepared to leave.

"Do not enter this area as conditions are dangerous," CFS tweeted earlier.

The fire alert came as strong winds buffeted South Australia this morning.

The winds are expected to continue moving south along the coast throughout the night, and the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds for regions including Kangaroo Island, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula and parts of Mount Lofty Ranges, Eastern Eyre Peninsula and Mid North districts.
